In rural western Guatemala, families face a healthcare system stretched far beyond its limits. There is just one doctor for every 10,000 people. Seventy-five percent of the country’s physicians are concentrated in Guatemala City. For patients in Nuevo Progreso and the surrounding highlands, barriers of distance, cost, and culture mean that even treatable conditions — cataracts, hearing loss, cleft lips, hernias — can go unaddressed for years.
That’s where you come in.
By joining a medical team with Hospital de la Familia Foundation, your skills travel further than they ever could at home. A week of your time can restore someone’s sight, give a child a new face, or free a family from the cycle of untreated, chronic illness.
What Your Presence Makes Possible
Hospital de la Familia in Nuevo Progreso performs over 8,000 surgeries every year and serves more than 20,000 patients — including 35% who cross the border from southern Mexico because there is simply nowhere else to go. Visiting volunteer specialists work alongside Guatemalan physicians to deliver advanced care across general surgery, OBGYN, plastic surgery, ENT, audiology, pediatric surgery, and ophthalmology.
No one is turned away. Patients pay on a sliding scale. Your presence on a team makes that possible.
